Successful Democracies Require Critical Thinking in All Facets of Society
In a segment from her April 10th, 2024 webinar, "Why a Thriving Democracy Requires Critical Thinking" Dr. Linda Elder discusses how no one element of society can be blamed for the failure of governments in general, and of democracies in particular. She makes the point that critical thinking must be fostered at all levels of society, from the family upward, in order to secure a successful democratic government that functions on behalf of the people.
For over 40 years, the Foundation for Critical Thinking - along with its sister organization, the Center for Critical Thinking - have worked toward the advancement of critical societies. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that seeks to promote essential change throughout education and society by cultivating fairminded critical thinking. I have worked through this and have witnessed one who simply refused to accept this model of critical thinking. He said that if he were to do this, it would call into question everything he believed in! That's actually the point! It's very sad that people fail to use this remarkable ability that we have to reason to the fullest extent that we presently understand.

When I first learned the Critical Thinking model she describes here, I looked for other models that were better, more fundamental, more central to the idea of Critical Thinking. I'm still looking. This model is simply the best there is. Everyone ought to know this. Intuitively, we all do, at least to a degree, but that is no substitute for explicitly understanding and purposefully using this model in our thinking.

I am a marxist and a historian and i love your example. Most of us do only present a marxist view. Just as liberals often present only their view. Historians, educators, and thinkers of all stripes ought be held against a critical lens. This is easily the best logic and critical thinking channel on youtube and i look forward to your discussions every time. Thank you for your work and for sharing this series!😊

This is an amazing lecture! I have greatly enjoyed how Dr. Paul demonstrated our egocentric nature and ease of validation and as an instructor who offered skills that Dr.Paul and Dr. Linda Elder have offered in thier wonderful book, l was able to coordinate very fruitful discussions and show that we can always become more rational. Thank you for posting this valuable video

Two things to remember when learning critical thinking, "It is not the case that I am always rational, and the people I disagree with are always irrational or arrogant". "Don't only find errors in the reasoning of other peoples, but also improve your reasoning". This is a nice video

The educational standards in the United States of America were dropped due to the large amount of failing grades, which in turn affected our children in the USA. This may have helped refugees or, emigrates, but it sure didn't help our American children.
